The Blue Rose

The house is dark and incredibly quiet. Even the night birds outside are silent. The witches are gone, and Sam and Ram have disappeared.

I kneel in front of my bookshelf and slide the blue book from its place on one of the lower shelves. Then I go to sit on my bed and gaze down at the cover. The light from my bedside lamp glimmers off the silver writing stamped onto the front: Myths and Teachings of the Lesser-Known Religious Orders.

An image of Jeanie, the lithe, cat-eyed woman who gave me the book, rises into my mind. Jeanie was a member of the Sisters of the Blue Heart—an esoteric religious order who apparently exists only because of me. If it wasn’t for Jeanie, who came to Turquoise Cove to find me, it’s quite possible I’d still be in the dark about who and what I am.

Jeanie had been ruthlessly honest with me. She’d revealed to me the legend of the Bright One, and laid out in plain English the horrible and very dangerous reality of my existence and what it means.

I trace the book’s lettering with my fingertip and wonder, not for the first time, how my life might have been different had I gone with Jeanie like she wanted. If I’d let the Blue Sisters teach me—train me for the confrontation with Lucifer they claim I can’t avoid.

But even then I’d known I could never leave Sam. Not willingly, anyway.

Sam’s determined face forces its way into my brain, sweeping away any thoughts of Jeanie and what might have been. His hard voice rolls through my mind. I won’t let it happen.

With anxious hands, I open the book to chapter six where the teachings of the Order of the Blue Heart are outlined. I’ve read the chapter numerous times. But this time I start scanning the pages for anything that might help me make sense of Minerva’s vision and decipher what Sam understood from it.

The book is a long shot. But with Sam’s refusal to share anything with me, and no other real leads I can think of, at least it’s a place to start.

I dread to think of a world in which Satan grows in power, but that is what will happen if the Bright One is defeated. And so I say to you: put aside your selfish concerns and devote your life to her service.
